Manual Aspiration Methods

The Issue: A prospective study¹of 263 patients published in 2004 (using traditional manual methods of needle insertion) evaluated the perception of pain associated with bone marrow punctures. Key findings included:

 
• Using a verbal rating scale, 19.9 percent of patients described the pain associated with their bone marrow puncture as severe, very severe or worst possible pain. 
• In more than 50 percent of punctures, physicians and nurses underestimated the severity of the pain when scores were compared to each patient's assessment of pain. 
• The duration of the procedure was the only factor measured that directly correlated with the perceived level of pain.

Power-driven Speed Enhances Comfort

The Solution: Early data² from needle insertions using the power-driven OnControl Aspiration System reflect a median pain score of 2.0 (scale of 0-10), with only seven percent of patients scoring pain at a level of 6-10. (Randomized, prospective studies comparing manual methods of bone marrow aspirations to the OnControl Aspiration System by Vidacare are in progress.)

OnControl™ Aspiration System by Vidacare provides excellent control during procedures where bone marrow is accessed. Data² indicates successful aspiration in 98 percent of patients.

Safety

Early data from insertion studies indicate that there have been no reports of complications associated with OnControl Aspiration System by Vidacare². The OnControl Aspiration System utilizes power to provide rapid, safe needle insertion.

The OnControl Aspiration System by Vidacare is appropriate for all patients requiring bone marrow aspiration, including:

 
• Patients for whom bone marrow aspiration has previously been difficult or painful 
• Young, athletic patients who have a hard bone cortex 
• Patients with osteoporosis or prior history of pelvic fractures 
• Patients with lytic bone disease
