Terrorism--A Massive Challenge for Homeland Security

Closer to home, American civilians are in danger of terrorist attacks. These attacks may include blast injuries or exposure to nuclear, biological or chemical agents. Thousands may die in a mass casualty situation simply because lifesaving drugs and fluids cannot be administered in a timely manner.

Currently, the Department of Homeland Security is spending millions of dollars to find ways to rapidly and effectively treat large numbers of victims. The EZ-IO® product system offers paramedics and other first responders the opportunity to save the lives of victims of disaster or terrorist attacks. The 2005 edition of Advanced Cardiac Life Support Guidelines now advocates intraosseous infusion of drugs or fluids for adults when traditional IV access is challenging or impossible.

The minimal learning curve required for successful use of the device, and the speed at which drugs and fluids can be administered makes the EZ-IO® product system ideal for first responders with limited experience. It also enables first responders to rapidly establish vascular access in mass casualty situations, freeing time to treat more patients.
