EZ-IO Wins Medical Design Excellence Award
Vidacare cited for its role as manufacturer San Antonio, Texas (July 8, 2005) - Vidacare Corporation today announced that EZ-IO was presented with a gold 2005 Medical Design Excellence Award at a ceremony held June 14 during the Medical Design & Manufacturing East 2005 Conference and Exposition at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
EZ-IO, developed at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, is the world's first battery-powered intraosseous (IO)access device that penetrates the IO space by drilling rapidly through the bone with a hollow needle. In cases such as shock, trauma or cardiac arrest, when traditional intravenous (IV) access is difficult or impossible, EZ-IO provides rapid and reliable vascular access for the administration of life-saving drugs or fluids.
The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition is organized and presented by Canon Communications LLC (Los Angeles) and is the premier awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Winners of MDEA excel in the areas of product innovation, design and engineering achievement, end-user benefit, and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing and healthcare delivery. A comprehensive review of entries was performed by an impartial, multidisciplinary panel of third-party jurors with expertise in biomedical engineering, human factors, industrial design, medicine, and diagnostics.
The 2005 jury selected gold and/or silver winners in 10 medical product categories. The EZ-IO was selected as a gold winner in the category of critical care and emergency medicine products. "Winning the 2005 Medical Design Excellence Award is a real honor for me and my team of professionals. We share the great personal satisfaction that comes from reports around the world of lives being saved by the EZ-IO," said Larry Miller, MD, CEO and Co-Founder of Vidacare Corporation. "The award will help ensure that the life-saving benefits of the EZ-IO will be widely recognized throughout the industry."
