Indications for Use:
For adults and pediatrics anytime in which vascular access is difficult to
obtain in emergent, urgent or medically necessary cases.
Reasons to use an IO device…
Patients who:
- Have an immediate need for drugs or fluids
- Previously required central venous access for infusion due to difficult vascular access
- Have limited or no vascular access
- Require multiple IV sticks to obtain vascular access for medication or fluid infusion
- Pain management – e.g. sickle cell anemia patients
- Need fluid resuscitation – e.g. dehydration
- Are in cardiac or respiratory arrest
- Require rapid intubation or sedation
- Intraosseous access for emergencies
Reasons you should not use an IO device (contraindications)…
- Fracture in targeted bone
- Previous orthopedic procedures near insertion site
- IO insertion in targeted bone within past 24 - 48 hours
- Infection at insertion site
- Inability to locate landmarks or excessive tissue
